"Look at it this way"

  I worked on this project with Peter Fox , another former President for over a year and a half on and off, with several meetings at Solly Street and some other work remotely. Isabel Richardson had done a great deal of preparatory work at Solly Street on the lantern slide collection, which used to number in the tens of thousands. Isabel had been cataloguing the collection. The plan was to make use of a fund generously donated by former Honorary Treasurer Brian Ellis , to bring these images back out into the open, and provide some ideas for their use in the classroom as well as some context. I worked with Peter Fox and we co-wrote the accompanying text for each image on the GA website. The website area is now live, and there is also an article that I have written for the latest GA Magazine. The Geograph project has appeared here numerous times over the years. It played a big part in my first trip up to the SAGT Conference. When it was first launched, I publicised it over on GeographyPages and contributed some early images of the Norfolk area and bagged a few squares along the coast. The Geograph Project Ltd is a small national charity – an online community and project that maps the British Isles with photographs and information, “to advance the education of the public in geography and heritage”. They have over 6 million moderated, geo-located and dated images on www, geograph.org.uk , made available through a Creative Commons Licence. Many people use the website to learn about where they live or areas they might visit. Don't forget that there is also a schools area providing some activities and games that can be played to explore the millions of images. Earlier today posted the ten thousandth picture up on my Flickr page. Check the sets for plenty of themed sets of images. There are certainly plenty of LANDSCAPE images from various EU countries, and all over the UK. Images available under Creative Commons non-commercial / attribution license.

  Here's  a picture I took earlier this morning when I headed out to capture the light on the snow covered fields on the edge of my village. It's the sort of image which you could possibly enter into a competition which has been announced by the Ordnance Survey. Out early on today to brave the ice and mist to take some photos... This was the second image that I worked on with a programme called Flare for Mac. This was a processed image. Thanks to @hoddergeography for the tip-off to an evocative set of images... BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY has a Flickr set of beautiful old travel posters... Here's a couple of examples, there are many more by following the link... Mitre Peak, New Zealand... I'll get here one day - as featured in my KS3 Toolkit book: "Look at it this Way".... These would make a lovely way to explore landscapes... I also really like this Joseph Binder image of Austria . Made even better by the fact that next week I fly out to Salzburg for 4 days to work on a European-wide GIS project. Images made available under Creative Commons license...

Coming shortly to this blog will be some supporting image sets for each of the lesson ideas in the toolkit book... Before then, here are some great LANDSCAPE images, which were prize winners in the Take a View: Landscape Photographer of the Year competition. The winner (reproduced above) was taken on the Isle of Skye by Emmanuel Coupe and is titled: Sunrise over the Old Man of Storr, Isle of Skye, Scotland. From BBC NEWS.
